These are the Rank descriptions. They tell what each ranks is.
Academy Students:
These are young boys and girls who are just starting down the path of the shinobi way. They are taught in their respective villages the ways to become great ninja as well as the rules for their villages. Each village has a different graduation requirements which depend on what the nation decides what's best.
Genin:
These are entry level ninja. They have passed their graduation requirements and are now of the path to become great ninja for their villages. Usually Genin are paired up in teams of three other Genin with one higher level Teacher (usually Jounin level). The teams tend to be evenly divided so that one team does not have all strong fighter or another having all weak fighter. Once placed into teams, they will go on missions with their team, learning the skills needed to pass into the higher ranks.
Chunin:
This is the middle rank for ninja. Also known as the Journeyman Ninja, these people can go on C and B rank mission alone and can oversee the teaching of other ninja. To obtain this level, a ninja goes through the Chunin exams. The Chunin exams test the ninja's strength, intelligence, and knowledge of the ninja way. There are some who can become ninja without taking the exam; though it depends on the village.
Jounin:
Those in the Jounin rank are highly skilled ninja who have great skill, knowledge, and strength. These ninja are sent on A ranked missions and can mentor a group of Genin if they wish. They can also be sent of S ranked missions if they have enough experience to do so. This ninja will often can perform two elemental jutsus, know some genjutsu, and have above average taijutsu skills.
Special Jounin:
These Ninja are Jounin who are known for special skills and abilities. They are train in one specific area, rather all-around like a regular Jounin is. They are often placed under a Jounin's command when it requires the mission requires a special task. Some are good at interrogation, while others are good a tracking. The skills of each Special Jounin are determined by the person, themselves.
Kage:
This is the head of each of the Great Nations. They are often the strongest ninja in their villages and are treated with the up most respect. They often will interact with other ninja nations to sign treaties and to carry out missions. The title Kage is a title that, once granted, stays with that person for life. If one Kage retires, another is selected to take their place. If a Kage dies and their is another that was retired, the retired Kage will take the place of the deceased.

ANBU:
These Ninja are special assassins or tactical ninja that take their orders directly from the Kage of that village. They are called out do perform task like torture and assassinations. They always have their masks on when working, even around their own village. Only the Kage and the Elder actually know who each ANBU members is. You can only be an ANBU member if you are chosen by the Kage of that village. Age, ranks, gender, height, weight, etc do not matter when it comes to decided on ANBU members. They will work is squads in order to make sure a mission is successful. You may leave the ANBU if you choose to.
Medical-Nin:
These are specialized ninja trained in the ways of healing. They are trained in special manners so they can avoid getting hurt as much as well as techniques needed to heal various wounds. They are often sent on missions with high ranked ninja in order to make sure the team comes back safely. In order to become a Medical-Nin, a person needs to have great intelligence and chakra control.
S-Class Ninja:
These are powerful Ninja either within or out of their own villages. They tend to have extreme ninjutsu and genjutsu experience and are often placed into the Bingo Books for enemy nations. Sometimes S-Class Ninja leave their villages, with permission of their Village, while come become missing ninja.
Missing-Nin:
There are Ninja that have left their villages without permission and do not intend to return. They do this either because they have their own agenda that they want to complete or because they feel that the village is too weak for them. Whatever the case, Missing-Nin are often hunted by others from their village and are placed in the Bingo Book as a traitor to their people. Sometimes the leader of the village will be mercy when it come to their Missing-Nin, but this is rare and only done if the leader decides. Most of the time, if a missing-nin is caught they are killed for treason.
Hunter-Nin:
This is a Special Group of ANBU with the Mist Villages ranks. They are used for hunting Missing-Nin and executing them. After they have made a kill, Hunter-Nin are supposed to dispose of the body on site so that the Village's secrets are not exposed. They are also known as the "Undertaker Squad."
Courier-Nin:
Courier-nin are ninja that deliver packages from one point to another. They take on extremely dangerous delivery jobs that others will not; these jobs can even be life threatening in nature. They use smoke to communicate with each other over long distances, and are a very determined group of ninja, taking the "postal motto" to new heights. They never deviate from their goals, and perfectly adhere to rules, regardless of what will happen if their package is delivered. When asked their name, they will use their designation number.
